Faial Island – The Blue Island of the Azores

The island of Faial, located in the heart of the Azores archipelago, is known as the "Blue Island", due to the abundance of hydrangeas that bloom during the summer months. With a landscape marked by the contrast between the blue of the Atlantic, the green of the fields and the black of the volcanic rock, Faial offers a unique combination of nature, culture, heritage and tranquillity.

Nature and Landscape

One of the island's main landmarks is the Faial Caldera, an imposing volcanic crater located in the centre of the island, ideal for hiking and taking in the landscape. Another must-visit spot is the Capelinhos Volcano, formed by the 1957–1958 eruption, whose barren, almost lunar landscape leaves visitors from around the world in awe.

Faial is also an excellent destination for outdoor activities, such as whale and dolphin watching, hiking trails, cycling, diving and boat trips.

Horta City and Architectural Heritage

The city of Horta, the island's main urban centre, stands out for its valuable architectural and historical heritage. Among the main monuments are the Fort of Santa Cruz (now a pousada), the Parish Church of São Salvador, the Jesuit College (now the Town Hall and Museum), the Clock Tower and several buildings of traditional design, which bear witness to the city's maritime and commercial past.

The Horta Marina, decorated with murals painted by sailors from around the world, is a symbol of the island and a mandatory stopover for those crossing the Atlantic.

Museums, Culture and Whaling

Horta has a number of museums that celebrate the history and identity of Faial. The Horta Museum features collections related to the island's natural history, ethnography and maritime life. The Faial Sacred Art Museum, housed in the church of the former Jesuit College (Church of the Most Holy Saviour of Horta or Parish Church), holds an important artistic and religious collection, reflecting the influence of the Church on Azorean history.

Faial's connection to the sea is also immortalised at Peter Café Sport, which is home to the Scrimshaw Museum, with a unique collection of pieces engraved by whalers on whale teeth and bones.

The island's history is deeply linked to whaling, an activity that shaped the economy and social life of Faial throughout the 19th and 20th centuries. To understand this legacy, a visit to the Whale Factory is essential. This museum space offers insight into hunting methods, whaling vessels, the tools used and the process of whale processing, preserving the memory of a past that left a profound mark on Faial's identity.

Traditional Gastronomy

Faial's gastronomy is rich and authentic, based on local produce from both the sea and the land.
Highlights include:

  • Traditional soups: broad bean soup, purslane soup, fennel soup, bean soup, chicken broth, fish soup and the traditional Holy Spirit Soups;
  • Fish and seafood: stewed octopus, fried horse mackerel, limpets, fish stew and oven-baked albacore tuna;
